Google's Hangout Blitz and g+ advantage

Many people have been saying that g+, Google's social networking platform, will never measure up to facebook and that it's a failure. This month, Google has been stepping it up and shown how bright its platform can shine. It's a great showcase of good innovation coupled with amazing marketing.

Just what has Google done?

  • Hangout with the President of the United States; people around the world get to see regular citizens interacting with the leader of a nation. It was more than just "cool," it was an inspiring showcase of how democracy is supposed to work.
  • Sharing circles on g+; this feature has been around since the start of google plus but its potential is now being aggressively showcased. You can follow things from different categories (Technology, Politics, Music, etc.) and then share these specific sources with your friends. A few of these circles have been shared with me by google employees and I must say it's not just awesome, it's better than Twitter.
  • Hangout with the New York Giants this thursday, 3 days before the Superbowl.
We all have a question to ask ourselves, how will google keep up this momentum? It will certainly drive their market share in the social media world, but it's not enough yet. It also means that facebook, Twitter, and Skype now have more than an imitator; they have competition that is functionally better. g+ is more respectful to your privacy than facebook, allows you to share your interests with your friends better than twitter, and has made headline news twice in a week (when is the last time you heard of Skype in the news?). Coupled with the recent personal search feature that explores your circles, g+ will start bringing in some serious $$$ to Google.

g+ started its hangout blitz; will it be able to best the offense from 3 social juggernaut fronts?
